Royal Air Force Typhoon jets have operated alongside French aircraft in a joint strike targeting an subterranean weapons facility in Syria employed by the IS group, per a report from the British defence ministry.

The facility, identified by reconnaissance, was believed to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the statement said, and was situated in hills just to the north of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our fighter planes used laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to strike a several access tunnels down to the facility... preliminary assessments are that the target was engaged successfully," officials stated.

There was no indication of any civilian casualties in the attack conducted Saturday night and every plane involved returned safely, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were backed up by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as the so-called Islamic State - imposed militant control over large swathes of Iraq and Syria until 2019.

"This action demonstrates the UK's leading role, and determination to operate in unison with our partners, to eradicate any revival of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary the minister remarked.

UK warplanes have conducted surveillance missions over Syria to "prevent any attempted resurgence" of IS after its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I extend gratitude to all the members of our armed forces who took part in this strike for their professionalism and their courage," the Defence Secretary said. "Including them were a great many UK service members on duty over the holidays. This action, to remove dangerous terrorists who pose a risk to our way of life, demonstrates how UK forces are always on standby, all year round, protecting the UK domestically and strong abroad."

Last December, the American forces conducted what it called a "massive strike" on Islamic State objectives in Syria, following an ambush killed two US servicemembers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. says Islamic State still boasts roughly 5-7 thousand militants in Syria and Iraq.
