One Piece Ends a Quarter-Century Tradition in the Coming Year

This marks the conclusion of a long-standing era for long-running series, with the production studio announcing a revised release plan for One Piece, which has run continuously for more than 25 years and included dozens of filler arcs. Commencing in the new year, once the Egghead Island arc wraps up, the anime will take a quarterly break until April, when the next major arc begins.

Updated Production Plan

Going forward, One Piece will release two seasons every annually for a maximum of 26 episodes. Toei states this will enable the anime to “explore further into the core of the universe — including more content, tempo, and timing of the original manga.” Yet, Toei conclude by hinting at “thrilling developments” during the hiatus period, which suggests more related projects, such as Netflix's live-action season 2, scheduled to debut in the interim.

Previous Hiatus Benefits

The One Piece anime previously took a six-month pause that started in late 2024 and concluded in early 2025. The hiatus was for the production team to enhance the visuals and let the comic to get further ahead to prevent a faster anime pace and lengthy recap episodes. The show couldn't benefit more from this respite, and it has managed to supply viewers with numerous action sequences, superior graphics, and less filler than previously.

Adopting Modern Trends

Although a few summary installments appeared during the recent run, the positive effects of this new production schedule far surpass the occasional interruption in the action. This additionally allows the manga, which is currently in the middle of the Elbaph arc, to extend its lead on the adaptation. According to the news, this may result in one episode of the anime covering one chapter, with some alternatively covering one and a half chapters or additional to compensate for scheduling.

This concludes of an era for Japanese animation, as the epic saga is the final major title to abandon the old-school way of production, which prioritized being on air for almost the entire year. This explains why iconic series such as Bleach, and of course One Piece have so many filler arcs, and the quality of the animation can vary widely between installments and the following. Today, series creation is organized in seasons, with one or two at most coming out each annually, allowing for better quality and more faithfulness to the source material.
